Sing Along… Because why should learning be just about reading?

I  have always wondered why we were made to sing all the rhymes during early days of school. But it was when I was humming my work presentation in a tune of my kid’s school rhyme, I realized how easy it is to remember the exact same thing. I have always stood in front of the mirror, done a few voice modulation tricks and practice the presentations and speeches the day before. But this time my schedule was too mixed up and I never got the time to practice in front of my mirror.

Sing Along… Because why should learning be just about reading?

Instead, I did a make do with what time was left. We mothers are damn good at one thing – multitasking! So, there I was, while cooking for my kids’ boxes, I started talking my presentation speech. I did not do a great job. My kid was in the dining hall singing a few rhymes and I suddenly switched into the tune. The entire presentation was just one great song. And what’s more you ask? I sang like a trained parrot in my presentation too. Not only it was one of my best presentations, it made me realize the important of early age learning techniques for children.

Don’t we all see our teens at home always listening to songs and making playlists. Ever heard them sing a full song without blinking an eye? Yes! believe me, they can sing a full song and pronounce the most impossible of words sometimes so fluently. Yet, ask them something out of their academic syllabus and they start scratching their heads. Wont it be easier and fun for kids to enjoy learning just like they enjoy music?

A study says that every person likes a particular genre of music because it seems to sync with their natural body vibrations / frequency. Some of us like loud music, but some like slow melodies. The tempo of songs also depends on the mood. Why do you think kids almost always like happy songs and party hits? Kids are naturally free from stress unlike us, energetic and happy minded. The tempo of happier songs, dance and party hits match their natural frequency.

They won’t appreciate your old playlist of legendary singers. They have their own music gods and goddesses. Not because they don’t follow the other songs, its simply because the classics don’t match their current mood and frequency. So, the next time you point out the “generation gap”, think again because it’s just nature. And do not worry, the kid will grow to like your playlist one day (LOL…)

There are several studies that say songs are a very effective way to teach and children at the prime age of being able to grasp things faster, this technique works effortlessly. Singing provides an emotional release for kids. For some kids it’s a way of expressing themselves especially when it very difficult to verbalize thoughts and feelings. Not just that, they say art has no boundaries. You would be surprised how easy it for your kids to learn a new language through songs. Yes! Singing helps kids improve their vocabulary and learn new things.

In many cultures group singing is a regular activity a part of the academic activity and education institutes encourage it. Group singing or Singing in choirs fosters musical artistry and develops a sense of community. Many academic and learning centers are trying this technique and found great success with kids of all ages. If you don’t believe me try Eunoia by EuroKids. Euro kids was a proud knowledge partner. I was glad to be a part of Happyon and it was super fun. Do visit them again in Mumbai next
