The Basics to Understand Depression and Care
We are all emotional beings. Our brain has parts that act when an event strikes. Everyone could not be strong. The intensity to bear differs. So, at least just don’t disturb a person who cries by your advice. Just give them time to feel the sadness.
What is depression?
Depression is a real thing. It is not just a few hours of sadness or stress. It is stress that had accumulated for long. “Please do not say I am depressed for, every minor thing.”(I have heard people saying I am depressed because I lost my new pen.)
Depression is not a means to escape reality. The extreme sadness comes because the reality of the life was hard to take. Depression could be mild, moderate or severe.

Depression does not always mean the person has to be on the bed 24/7. No one desires it. Understand, “They do take steps to change”. Not all those with depression behave the same. It may be your friend or relative who suffers. Here are
5 Basics things you should understand about depression
1) Give the freedom to feel sad and express
Depression can hit anyone at any age. It has not spared celebrities who achieved too. Even the famous author gave the all-time hit, “Harry Potter series” after her depressive episode. J.K Rowling says, “Sad hurts but it’s a healthy feeling. It is necessary to feel. Depression is very different.
So, understand and give them the freedom to feel sad and express. Be empathetic. Please do not say “It is so simple, don’t be in past, Forget it” These words never help.Give them the time to talk, don’t ignore their words. Assure them that they can always share things with you.
2) Do not start giving solutions and future plans
The past or the current situation is hard to face. Rollo may say “Depression is the inability to construct future” So, when they are not able to, please don’t confuse them. Don’t say they are rude if you get scolded. The mistake is yours. When they share, please listen and make them feel good by doing what they like.
3) Do not force them to smile when they can’t

Good humor is an antidote for the depressed mind. But, do not force the depressed person smile, like how you force the sick person to drink medicine.Try your sense of humor. If they don’t smile, just leave. Call them out and make them happy when they are ready, and not when you want them to be ready.
4) Do not blame for the inability to be energetic
Just think, will you be really happy to be lazy and be in bed all day? Depression pushes them to bed with tears. So, please don’t blame them.
5) Appreciate when they do small things despite the struggle
Yes, the important thing is to appreciate the little things, like getting up early and taking efforts to go for a walk.
Depression is not the end of life. Remember, it may lead to a new start soon. Depression is something which can be changed by external help. A friend, professional or a professional who is your friend can give a helping hand.
