In this technology-driven world, the habit of reading is diminishing slowly. There are days when I wonder why are kids addicted to gadgets and not book. We as a parent are our child’s first teacher. We need to incorporate the habit of reading. The benefit of reading is immense, regularly reading helps to improve cognitive development and increases the parent-child bonding.
Reading is more than introducing new words and alphabets to the child, it is an art that transforms a child into a responsible citizen in the future. Additionally, introducing books from an early age sharpens language and literacy skills. Here are

1. Start Early

Introduce books as early as possible, I used to buy board books, sound books, touch and feel books for Akshara when she was just 6 months. She loved exploring big colourful pictures. Young babies respond to colour pictures and sound books.

Read with your child every day, it will encourage them to be an independent reader. Reread their favourite stories which they like to hear again and again. Let them share their version of the story. Create excitement about the books and characters, this will elevate the interest factor towards reading.

3. Choose Diverse Books

Books are a great option to teach different cultures, trends, events, genres to the child. Incorporate diverse book collection, it will provide exposure to a variety of culture, traditions, genres. Additionally, when you select diverse books, it increases the learning horizon of the child.

4. Be A Part Of Reading Challenge

British Council in collaboration with the Reading Agency

British Council in collaboration with the Reading Agency offers an amazing platform for children aged 5-11 years through the Reading Challenge. The primary goal of the reading challenge is to encourage the child to read for pleasure, improve their English, and become confident readers. The theme of this reading challenge is Space Chase, this theme is inspired by the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.

5. Reading Workshops

Enrolling your children in workshops is another excellent way to raise a reader. The workshops by British Council are interactive, engaging and curated to improve the language skills in a fun way. The child learns about various things like how to structure a stories, boost imagination, learn storytelling skills, creative writing and lot more.

My daughter is all set to be a part of a reading challenge, the kid must read a minimum of 6 books in 6 weeks from the collection of 35 new, hand-picked books issued on a returnable basis.
